A) INTRODUCTION AND ADVANTAGES: Steel is such material that has played an important role in the development of mankind in the last century. Today, it is difficult to imagine a world without steel. Steel has become vital to our everyday life. It is at the root of the quality of life that each of us enjoys today, helping to shelter us, to feed us and to facilitate both our working day and leisure activities. We depend on steel for almost everything from our houses and buildings, the cars we drive, roads, bridges, agricultural equipment, machines. Iron & Steel, being backbone of the economy plays a vital role in the development of any nation. In India consumption of Iron & Steel is still much lower in comparison to the developed countries. Consumption of Iron & Steel in India has to increase with the increase in economy and industrialization in the country. Most common form of steel is steel rods used in the construction industry, which is manufactured by the re-rolling mills. With the changes in technology, the raw material for Re-rolling mills has been accepted as Steel Billet/Ingots, which is manufactured from Sponge Iron & other iron & steel scraps. The consumers of Mild Steel (MS) Ingots/Billet are Steel Re-rolling mills, which manufacture consumer grade Rods, Rounds (Plain & Tor), Squares, flats, Angles, Channels etc of various sections as per market requirements. Traditionally the steel furnace industry was dependent on (i) scrap generated from ship breaking and (ii) imported scrap. Availability of such scrap has declined and on the other hand use of sponge iron as raw material improves the quality standard and has various other advantages. As such consumption of sponge iron has been consistently increasing and this trend would continue.
